Nepal has some of the worst maternal death statistics in the world, with some six women dying in childbirth every day.

Despite the political instability of the past ten years of civil war, the Nepalese government is introducing measures to improve safety for mothers but so far little seems to be working.

Subina Shrestha, a Nepalese filmmaker who is herself five months pregnant, sets out to find out why so many mothers are dying in childbirth. In the following account she looks at the human stories behind these statistics.

Maoists in May Day call to Nepal Church

Nepali Maoists have asked Catholic Church officials to help accommodate tens of thousands of people from villages and towns they are bringing to the capital for their May Day rally.

Jesuit Bishop Anthony Sharma, apostolic vicar of Nepal, told UCA News, “We have just told them that this [the church premises] is not a ‘Dharmasala’ [the traditional Nepalese word for ‘place of refuge' for pilgrims].”

A Himal Khabarpatrika investigation shows that 'marriage bureaus' that advertise in the papers are selling Nepali girls to Korean men to be re-married to elderly farmers in rural Korea.
Two undercover women reporters posing as prospective brides were asked last month for Rs 500,000 as a facilitation fee to be paired off with Korean men who would take them to Korea. Some women have paid up to Rs 1 million to brokers to be 'married' so they can go to Korea to work. But once they get there they are sold to older men to work like slaves.
