Nepal PM unveils ambitious dev't plan
Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai on Thursday unveiled an ambitious “vision paper” where he laid emphasis on infrastructure development and on creating massive employment opportunities. The notable ones in the long list of infrastructure projects are the Kathmandu-Tarai Fast Track, Mid-Hill Highway, a second international airport outside Kathmandu, two regional airports of international stature and the Melamchi Drinking Water Project. Power generation is also high on the PM’s agenda. The paper talks of completing the detailed project report of the 600-MW Budhi Gandaki hydropower project and starting construction of the 750-MW West Seti project. The government has already approached the Chinese government, seeking a credit line for the development of these two projects in its efforts to address the severe power crisis facing the country.
Binaytara Foundation to Develop First Blood and Marrow Transplant Center in Nepal
Binaytara Foundation (BTF) and the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System have partnered with B.P. Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital, Bharatpur, Nepal, in a project to develop the country's first Blood and Marrow Stem Cell Transplant (BMT) Center. Stem cell transplant is a standard procedure for the treatment of many blood cancers. The planned BMT center in Bharatpur will aim to serve not only the 30 million people of Nepal but also millions of people from neighbouring India. BTF and University of Illinois joint efforts will facilitate the training of physicians, and support in the development of a modern blood bank. A block of 5 patient rooms at B.P. Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital has been allocated for the care of patients who will receive BMT. University of Illinois Blood and Marrow Transplant Program and Center for Global Health will assist BTF's efforts to work closely with staff in Nepal via telemedicine training programs as well as hosting physicians from Nepal in Chicago, Illinois.

Showdown looms as students set deadline for price retreat
KATHMANDU, Jan 26: The government and agitating students look set for a confrontation, with the students giving a deadline of 11 a.m. Thursday to withdraw the decision to raise fuel prices and the Ministry of Commerce and Supplies refusing to relent.
