World heritage site in decrepit state

BHAKTAPUR: The world heritage Taleju Bhawani Temple is in dilapidated state due to lack of conservation.

The main door (gold door) and statues inside the temples have been disfigured and are covered with moss.

Even though they need painting, the authorities concerned have not shown any interest yet.

Similarly, shrubs have grown in and around the sculpture of Bhupatindra Malla and garbage has gathered.

NTY promotion at Indian border cities

KATHMANDU; Nepal Tourism Year (NTY) 2011 Coordinating Committee — with an aim to bring 3,00,000 Indian tourists — is going to start its promotional programme at the Indian border cities.
“We are set for the promotion programme at Gorakhpur, Lucknow, Raxual, Sitamadi, and Sunauli and other places at the Nepal-India border cities,” said Dhruba Narayan Shrestha, coordinator of tourism sector at the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) and a member of NTY 2011 working committee.

'Spanish climber dies on Nepal's Annapurna'

MADRID (AFP) – Spanish climber Tolo Calafat, who suffered swelling on the brain while descending Nepal's famed Mount Annapurna in the Himalayas, died Thursday before he could be rescued, a climbing partner said.

"He is dead," veteran Spanish climber Juanito Oiarzabal, who reached the summit of Mount Annapurna on Tuesday along with a third Spanish climber, told Spain's National Radio station.

Calafat, a 39-year-old father of two from Majorca on Spain's Balearic Islands, was no longer answering the satellite phone which he had used to speak with his family and call for help, he added.

Shanghai Expo to promote NTY-2011

Nepal is going participate in Shanghai Expo-2010 from May 1 to attract and promote Nepal’s Tourism Year 2011 (NTY-2011).

As NTY-2011 aims to bring in 10 million tourists to Nepal, the Nepal pavilion at Shanghai Expo is focusing on attracting more Chinese tourists and will be distributing millions of brochures in Chinese language about Nepal and its tourism destination for the success of NTY-2011.

Nepal promoting gay weddings on Everest

EVEREST could become the new Brokeback Mountain with Nepal promoting gay weddings on the famous mountain.

Nepal Tourism Minister Sharat Singh Bhandari said the country wants to re-establish tourism and hopes to become the first nation in Asia to allow same-sex marriages, Timesonline reports.

Mr Bhandari said he has already written to the International Conference on Gay & Lesbian Tourism in Boston.

“As the world knows, Nepal is the land of Mount Everest, world’s highest peak and the birth place of Lord Buddha, light of Asia,” the message said.

The regular bus service from Tibet's capital of Lhasa to Nepal's capital of Katmandu is expected to resume on May 7, according to chinatibetnews.com.

A new ticket may cost 70 to 80 U.S. dollars, excluding boarding and food.

Domestic visitors to Nepal can book tickets directly at Lhasa's Liuwu and Xijiao bus stations after going through exit procedures. Foreign tourists have to undergo related procedures through travel agencies.

India, Nepal, China join hands to conserve Greater Mt Kailash

NEW DELHI: India, China and Nepal have joined hands to develop a common conservation strategy and environmental monitoring plan for the fragile Greater Mount Kailash region.

This is a first step towards developing a regional cooperation framework for this transboundary region linked to the sacred mountain, also known as Kang Rinpoche, Gangrenboqi Feng, and Kailasa Parvata, a statement from the Environment Ministry said here.
